2008 NSX:
- A vehicle like the NSX comes along perhaps once in a
generation. By every measurable standard, the NSX is a milestone car that has established
a standard for exotics which few have yet to rival.
- In typical Honda fashion, the NSX was designed to do
more with less. The key is not how many cubic inches an engine has, but making the cubic
inches you have work to their full potential. With a 3.2-liter DOHC VTEC V6 engine, the
NSX performs as if it had a much larger engine.
- The goals of the 6-speed manual transmission are
to provide close ratios to get the maximum performance from the engine and to provide the
driver with the same short shifter throws of an open wheel race car. To achieve this the
NSX manual gearbox is equipped with dual cone synchronizers for first, third, and fourth
gears, with second gear using a triple cone design for durability. The dual cone design
reduces shift load by 40 to 50 percent and provides quick, smooth, nearly effortless
engagement. Synchromesh is also used for reverse gear. Even ten years after the NSX was
first introduced, it still has one of the shortest shift throws of any exotic car.
- Until the NSX, only pure race cars were equipped with
titanium connecting rods. Titanium was chosen because it's stronger than steel but
lighter. The NSX engine needed this strength and reduced weight to achieve the 8,000-rpm
targets the engineers had targeted for the engine. Lighter weight reduces the
reciprocating mass of the rods and therefore lets the engine rev higher and more quickly.
They wanted the driver to experience the same high-revving thrills that are usually
reserved for race car drivers.
