1999 European Accord Type R!

While the bread and butter Accords already very
fine driver cars, the Type R is really more like super touring race car, though a
quite civilized one. Accord Type R upgrades includes 17" wheels, stiffened
bars, lowered and stiffened suspension, bigger disc brakes and provided with a limited
slip differential, heavy duty clutch and special gearbox. Also some weight has been
reduced by removing e.g. part of the sound insulation. Like the Integra, the Accord Type R
also has a genuine Momo steering wheel , Recaro sport seats and the famous titanium
gear handle knob. The meters have sporty white face instead of black. The dash of the Euro
Accord is practically identical to that of the Japan Accord. The Accord Type R can
be equipped with an enormous rear spoiler. A nice touch are the double exhaust pipes like
the new TL and Accord coupe.
How does it ride? Well, phenomenally good. Not only was the DOHC VTEC engine very strong
in all RPM but especially so at high rpm. The road holding is simply excellent! The car is
very good balanced and easily controllable under all circumstances. Compared with the
Integra, the Accord Type R is more civilized and actually quite comfortable and not
at all noisy. Of course, if you will, you can enjoy the racy sound by revving the VTEC
engine to the highest rpm regions.
For the time being the Type R will be available in Europe only, so too bad for you
car enthousiasts in North America. However, it is not impossible that the Type R
Accord will be exported from Europe to USA, Canada and Japan in the not too distant
future. In the meantime, you can enjoy the excellent new TL, unfortunately not available
in Europe.
In addition to the 4-door sedan, a 5-door Accord version will be available in late 1999.
This version will be unveiled in Auto Salon in Paris where the 4-door sedans will be shown
for the first time to the general public.
Prices:
Car prices in Europe vary a great deal due to differences in VAT ( value added tax ) and
other taxes. So the basic Accord will probably cost about $ 20,000 in Germany and about $
23-25,000 in the Netherlands, which are quite expensive compared to USA, especially as the
equipment level in USA is generally much higher.
The Type R will cost probably around $32-35,000 in Germany and around $40,000 in
Holland.
